After using a regular old fire extinguisher to put out the blaze I’d started with all of the purple lightning, I knew I was in trouble. I’d blown a hole in the wall and exposed water pipes that dripped steadily from the missing plaster. What had once been a gorgeous bas-relief of a winged sun disc on the wall, now looked like a giant jigsaw puzzle strewn across the floor. Luckily, that seemed to be the only true structural damage to the dining room. Besides a little light scorching of the tapestries and about an inch of brackish rainwater around our ankles—a mixture that suspiciously like blood, pigs’ blood I hoped—I didn’t see anything else broken.

Unfortunately, some things are worse than structural damage. Locusts and frogs covered every square inch of the theater. By the looks of it, the frogs would take care of the bug problem, but then we’d still have a frog problem. And then there were the rather large and rather painful boils dotting our faces and arms.

“What are you going to tell the tourists?” Seth asked. He touched a particularly protuberant boil on the end of his nose and winced. “What am I going to tell my patients? This isn’t contagious, is it?”

“You’re the medical doctor! You tell us,” I said.

Piper had a slightly dazed look on her face. She blinked a few times, staring at the ruined hall of her job. While she wasn’t the owner, she was the manager, writer, and head chef of the dinner theater, and this was not good. Not good at all. Honestly, I was impressed she only looked slightly dazed. I had no chill at all. I had paced the dining room three times, squishing at least thirty locusts, screaming each time like I expected a different outcome.

“Say it was a gas leak,” Seth suggested when we both stayed silent. “That’s a pretty standard operating procedure for unexplained paranormal problems.”

“A gas leak,” she repeated.

“That’s going to take a heckuva a lot of Heka to fix,” I said finally. And for a moment, both just stared at me like that joke had never occurred to them. Then, Piper began laughing, almost hysterically, and I figured she’d finally cracked. Seth’s medical instincts took over, and he helped her breath through the panic attack. I wasn’t sure what to do because, based on what I now knew, I tended to make bad things worse in any given situation. In a grave situation like this, I was more likely to make it nuclear.

“Sorry,” I said hastily. “Blame it on the dark goddess that I’m apparently blessed by. I highly doubt she had great social skills in times of tragedy. In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb and say she was probably the worst person to talk to in a time of tragedy.”

“Stop babbling,” Seth said, rubbing concentric circles on Piper’s back. “We’re going to fix this, and it won’t take that much Heka.”

A fixing spell surged to mind now that I had my memories back.
